Lack-lustre Display

Waikato Division 1

Lack of match play was the contributing factor towards Ngaruawahia’s lack-lustre showing against Teachers/Varsity on Saturday. Ngaruawahia United had had the previous two games postponed by the W.F.A. where their opponents were involved in the Chatham Cup and representative matches. However the much needed two points came United’s way when they ended the game with a 4-1 win.

Ngaruawahia kicked off. A floating centre from Malcolm Burt was misjudged by the Varsity keeper and Charlie Gorman nodded home to put Ngaruawahia 1 up.

Phil Bullivant took Ngaruawahia further ahead when he blasted one in from three metres out after some scrappy interplay between his forwards. Half time 2-0.

Mike Liddle nearly took the third goal when he scooped a low corner over the bar from 20 metres out. United’s third goal came when Charles Gorman chested down a weak goal kick, chipped it to his brother Neil Gorman who played it back to Phil Bullivant who drove a curving shot into the bottom left corner from 25 metres.

Varsity put their score on the board in the 80th minute with a break away goal that was well placed under the on-rushing keeper.

The last goal of the match was scored by Malcolm Burt who ran on to a mis-shot by Neil Gorman and scored from an extremely acute angle on the right to make it 4-1.
