Ngaruawahia Soccer

Cameron, the local third division club, were Waikeria’s most vociferate supporters when Waikeria met Ngaruawahia at Centennial Park on Saturday. The Cameron team had no game against Putaruru as Putaruru could not travel because of the petrol shortage, and these ex-Ngaruawahia players provided Waikeria with verbal incentive throughout the match.

Neil Gorman notched up a goal for Ngaruawahia in the first five minutes as the result of some fine ball-work. Shortly after he played a penalty shot directly at the keeper, allowing only a one-goal lead. Waikeria equalised by heading in after a “My ball” call in the penalty area, that was heard by the referee but unheeded.

In the second half Waikeria had it all their own way. Late and foul tackles, intimidation and hand balls were their approach to the game. They put their winning goal in from a bit of clever footwork in front of the goal.

Several of the Ngaruawahia players were cautioned by the referee for protesting against his lack of decision. On four occasions Waikeria handled in their own penalty area. This is the first time in three years that Waikeria have beaten United.

Fourth Division

Hamilton ran away against Ngaruawahia to the tune of 8-1 with Martin Collins scoring for Ngaruawahia.

Ngaruawahia now have two fourth division teams in the Waikato competition and are welcoming more players of this age group into the club.
