Huntly Thistle Draw Soccer with Ngaruawahia

Waikato Division 1

In hot conditions, Huntly Thistle played a hard game against Ngaruawahia, the competition leaders, to force a 0-0 draw. The first half saw Huntly playing into the sun and on the defensive for most of the time with fine work by the fullbacks and goalie spoiling Ngaruawahia’s many opportunities. Thus considering themselves somewhat fortunate.

Huntly entered the second half with a couple of players changed. In typical fashion Huntly’s superior fitness showed through as they put Ngaruawahia on the defensive. Several fine shots by Ivor Stewart just missed the goal and Huntly started to play more as a team. Special mention must be made of Ronnie Johnson who played particularly well on the left wing. Bill Giles ran well in the centre field filling many gaps and having the odd shot at goal himself.

The game see-sawed up and down the field for the rest of the half. Full credit must go to Donald Godsall, Huntly’s goalie,  for many fine saves and a generally excellent game. Donald also won the Tirewelders Ltd player of the game award. And so the game ended with the ball not yet in either net.

A fine game Huntly against a tough opponent.
