Town firms get soccer ball rolling
Welcome to raffle town.
Ngaruawahia, after making the last four of soccer’s Chatham Cup, has gone fund-raising crazy to get the team to Dunedin.
Club president Maxine Williams says it could need closer to $15,000 than the $10,000 first suggested to fly the Northern League first division team south on August 16 to play Dunedin Technical.
And spurred on by a $1000 donation from the Waikato Times, town businesses have queued up with offers of cash and vouchers.
Now club members must sell a host of raffle tickets to make sure the vouchers help the fund.
Mrs Williams said she “just about cried” this week after children at Waipa School, across the road from her club, raised $50.
But it’s back to bread and butter stuff tomorrow. Ngaruawahia have a Northern League home match against South Auckland Rangers.
