Not So Bad
Waikato 2nd Division
After being humiliated 6-1 at Te Awamutu in the first round of the 2nd Division Marshall Cup soccer tournament, Ngaruawahia held their faster opponents to a 2-0 win at Ngaruawahia on Saturday.
Te Awamutu were faster to the ball and were often given it by the Ngaruawahia defence. The local attack lacked penetration and even Geoff Brunning’s weaving runs brought no success. Both Te Awamutu’s goals were scored in the first half and they also missed a penalty.
Jeffrey McLaughlin (having already played 75 minutes for the juniors) threw the Te Awamutu defence into an immediate scramble when he replaced Steve Hayward at left wing and nearly scored. Ian Todd was unable to cut the ball back from his position on the right wing and he saw many of his crosses sailing over the goal line.
Mr Joe Templeton refereed in the absence of an official association referee and did so impeccably, neither side faulting his decisions.
Ngaruawahia meet Te Awamutu again at home this Saturday in the start of a subsidiary competition at 2.45 p.m.
Green Beats Red
Waikato 4th Division
The Ngaruawahia Junior B soccer team (Reds) threw their A team (Greens) off stride partially in their match on Saturday. Much of the credit must go to Greg Kelly who played in goal fro Red. Shot after shot was blocked and parried and only a fine lobbed cross by Martin Collens beat Greg and Chris Duffull was there to side-foot it home. This was the only score in the first half.
Final score 4-0 to Green.
