Huntly wins Ladies soccer at Ngaruawahia
In perfect conditions Huntly Ladies ran out decisive winners over Cameron by five goals to 0.
After a scrappy first 10 minutes Julie Topp took the ball at the half-way line and after a good solo run beat both defence and goalkeeper to put Huntly into a 1-0 lead with a well-placed shot into the back of the net.
For the remainder of the first half, play see-sawed from one end of the field to the other. Only sterling work on the part of Huntly’s defensive trio of Denise Barnett, Karen Rushton and Lynda Topp keeping Cameron at bay. It was in this period of play that goalie Rowie Layne made a rather spectacular if unorthodox save. Beaten by a shot from Cameron’s forwards she chased the ball and only a yard from the goal and facing the wrong way she flicked the ball behind her with her left hand and Lynda Topp managed to scramble the ball clear. Half-time came with the score 1-0 to Huntly.
From the kick-off in the second spell, Huntly surged onto the attack and after only two minutes Debra Barnett, through good follow-up play, steered the ball into the net to make the score 2-0. This second goal seemed to lift Huntly and apart from some brief periods of defence further goals from Pat Avery, a second from Julie Topp and one from Donna Hepburn saw a very elated Huntly team returning home with two well deserved competition points.
Player of the Day award went to Julie Topp for her consistent play in what was a real team effort.
