Northern League Ngaruawahia-Affco
United lost their chance of 2nd place in the Northern League 4th division on Saturday when they were defeated 2-1 at home by Taupo.
For the 3rd week in a row, Ngaruawahia had more than their share of possession but lacked finishing ability in front of the goal. The first, 30 minutes saw countless chances go astray, each one adding to the growing frustration of the home team. A good through ball by John Brown in the 20th minute was picked up by Ken Murray who was unable to get it past the advancing Taupo keeper; the rebound fell to Jeff McGlaughlan who somehow managed to miss the open goal from close range.
The second half deteriorated into a very physical encounter and a confused Ngaruawahia defense saw two goals put past them. Ngaruawahia retaliated when John Brown closed the goal difference with a fine header from a corner.
Five minutes later Brown again netted the ball, but the referee ignored his linesman and awarded a goal kick. This proved to be the last straw for the disheartened home team, and soon after the final whistle was blown to leave the score at Taupo 2 – Ngaruawahia-Affco 1.
High School Girls
Pae Brown (4) and Paula Douglas (3) lead the goal-scoring against Hamilton Girls High School at Ngaruawahia on Saturday. Betsy Maxwell and Jenny Clow added one each for the 9-0 win.
As a non-competition game, many of the reserve girls were given a full run and they enjoyed the 60 minutes. H.G.H.S., a late entry, was unable to enter in time for the initial round and is playing friendlies in the place of the withdrawn Fairfield No. 2 team.
With a full-strength squad this Saturday to meet Melville, the girls are hoping for another win to claim the competition before entering the knock-out round. Ace goal-keeper cum winger Lyn Karina will replace Diane Fairey in goal on Saturday with the regular squad members coming back in after a one-game rest.

Huntly Junior Soccer
9th grade ‘B’ – Playing away against a very strong Nga/Affco side, Huntly lost 3-0, and were forced into playing a defensive game for most of the 40 minutes.
Leon Currall at centre back and Clifford Brett at right back tackled strongly, breaking up some very good opposition moves, but under constant pressure the Huntly defence broke allowing the home team to get their first goal after 20 minutes of play.
Still under pressure in the second half the opposition scored again within 2 minutes of re-start, occasionally our lads broke away and Wayne Bulloch came near to scoring on occasion.
Seventeen minutes from full time a beautiful lob from a Nga/Affco forward caught Warren Turton, goalkeeper, on the wrong foot, for the home teams third and final goal.
In their last encounter with this team Huntly lost 4-0 at home so in losing away, the boys can take pride that they are still improving.
