Ngaruawahia-Affco v Tauranga

Early pressure by Ngaruawahia United in their northern league fourth division soccer match against Tauranga was soon reversed by Tauranga and they went ahead in the 18th minute when an error in defence caught United wide open from a simple cross and United found themselves down 0-1.

However United received a penalty for obstruction several minutes later and John Brown smacked the ball in for the equalizer. Later it was Brown who gave United the winner when he took the ball on the half and, ball to toe, neck and neck with the Tauranga defense, he slid the ball through between the frantic defender and the keeper to see it beat the cover defense into the net.

George Paul looks better every game in midfield, and along side Jason Cargo whose touches of brilliant distribution caused concern in the Tauranga defense, they made a good midfield team with Mike Liddle. Shawn Finn was his acrobatic self ,and, along with winger Jeff McLaughlan, were named men of the match by Radio Waikato.

Neil Gorman Finds Form

Neil Gorman notched both United goals in their 2-1 win over Unicol at Hamilton in the Waikato 1st division soccer competition. This was the first game of a subsidary round.

United Still Undefeated

With five championship games behind them in the Waikato 3rd division soccer competition, Ngaruawahia United continued their wins with a 6-2 victory away at Tokoroa. This puts Ngaruawahia four points clear at the top of the table in front of Tokoroa and five points clear of Te Kuiti.

High School Girls

In the final match this term Ngaruawahia High School girls team met in a friendly at Fraser High School, Fraser’s No 2 team. Goals from Jenny Clow and Ho Keeley (2) paved the way for a 3-0 win to Ngaruawahia.

Diane Fairey had two tight situations to clear up in goal for Narra. while Betsy Maxwell tried out her power shots from long range. Eileen Harrison had her first run on the left wing before shooting off to netball in Taupiri.

From 11 games the girls have lost only one and drawn one, and conceded five goals while scoring 47.
