Thistle Ladies Score Good Win in Soccer

At Ngaruawahia last Sunday the Huntly Thistle ladies soccer team out played the United “B” team by 4 goals to 0 in the forth round of the Pandora Cup. The game played in ideal conditions and before a good crowd, was as the score suggested, a one sided affair.

After ten minutes the Thistle striker Marteene Hinton opened the scoring when she received a through ball from the midfield beat the defence and slammed the ball into the back of the net, Huntly l United 0.

Chances were being missed left right and centre by the Huntly forwards and it wasn’t until five minutes to halftime that midfield player Donna Hepburn lobbed a ball from about 20 metres out over the heads of the United defence into the goal. Halftime score Huntly 2 United 0.

The second half had only been going five minutes when Brenda Stuart, recent signing from Ngaruawahia scored Thistle’s third goal. Huntly at this stage were all over the opposition and were unlucky not to have scored on several occasions. The third goal was a bit of a scramble in the penalty box before Marteene managed to get her foot to it and thump it into the net to make the final score Huntly 4 United 0. The Thistle keeper Rangi Troughear only touched the ball once during the whole game showing the Thistle defence were very sound, in particular Christine Towner, the Thistle player of the day.

Other players to stand out were Karen Ruston who played on the right wing, and Marg Robinson who played a good game as centre back.

Next week they will find the game a lot harder when they travel back to Ngaruawahia to play the number one team.

One aspect of ladies soccer that I have noticed is the number of coaches on the side line, not official, who scream at the girls to do this and that. I think if these people were to keep their mouths shut and let the girls get on with the game it would be more interesting to watch.

Other results were Addidas Challenge trophy. Huntly 5 Matamata 0. Waikato 2nd division Unicol I Huntly 0.
