NGARUAWAHIA HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS

The team was reformed after a one-year layoff and played well. In the inaugural year of girls soccer (1978) the team won, came second the following year (1979) and after the break lost just three games.

The girls finished runners-up to Morrinsville College.
In Inter-school visits the girls were matched against the Hillcrest top side and went down 1-4. Against Huntly, NHS had difficulty fielding a full side and won narrowly 2-0. A trip to Papakura resulted in a 3-0 win. It was interesting to note that Papakura fielded a completely fresh 11 players in the second half! It was Ngaruawahia’s positional play that won through in the end.

Soccer showed an increase in interest over the past season with an added number of 3rd formers getting involved.
The Juniors were entered in the Form 3B competition. Their first game was away to Te Kuiti and the trip was combined with a vist to the Waitomo Caves. The competition was hard and the team came out on top in the second round through wins over Cambridge and Fairfield and drawing with Huntly.
Juniors to show ability were Sean Miller, Michael McLaren, Darren Allison, Neil Newport, Michael Ringrose, Bhutta Gurmel and Shane Harrison.
Darren and Owen Allison had the rare distinction of both scoring hat-tricks in the same game!
The Most Improved junior was Michael Ringrose. Neil Newport and Shane Harrison were the two most supportive team members and the Most Skillful player was Sean Miller.

The senior boys in the school joined Ngaruawahia United and were catered for in the Waikato 3rd Division. There performance earned them the Waikato Referee’s Association Cup for being the Best and Fairest team of ALL teams in the Waikato.
The side was Captained by Brian Harding and team-member Gary Ridley was named by the Club as the Most Improved player. Deane Puncheon got the nod as the Most Improved player from the school, with John Bell and Brian Harding getting the NHS Most Outstanding trophy.
Interschool competition for the 1st XI came with mixed success: v Hillcrest High lost 0-8, v Papakura High lost 1-5, v Tamaki College won 5-1, v Huntly College lost 3-5.
Two composite teams of seniors and juniors were made up to compete as a Junior A and a Junior B side to play Raglan and Te Kuiti. The Raglan game was won 6-1 and the other lost 0-3 to Te Kuiti. Players to stand out in this area were Deane Puncheon, Stephen Smith, Owen Allison, Andrew Pharo, Murray Wills and David Hodge.
